Hope Is the Thing With Feathers, oil on three dimensional panel, 10x8x2. Private collection

In Case of Emergency Break Glass: Margarita, oil on three dimensional panel, 14x11x2. Private collection

Do you have an idea for a painting for yourself? I love to do commissions, and I especially enjoy collaborating one-on-one to create something special for my collectors. We can discuss your painting over the phone or email.

Once I have an idea of what you have in mind, I can give you a price based on size and complexity, and a timeline for creating your painting. With some pieces I make a detailed sketch for your approval. With others I’ll send you photographs of the set up to work out the theme and composition. You can have me frame your piece or choose your own frame to complement where you plan to hang the painting in your home.

I’ve included a few photographs of a recent commission to illustrate how the process works. A collector contacted me through one of my galleries and was interested in a painting from my ‘Young Artist Shows Promise” series of her and her dog, a barn with an American flag, and her dog’s favorite toy. She sent me a few photographs to help me design the painting.

The first step was making a sketch of the piece and working out the composition. The client asked for a few small changes, and next I created a full color crayon rendering of the model drawing for the painting. Once all the colors were approved, I hung the drawing in my studio and got to work. I made a custom panel with a toned oil ground for the painting and transferred the line drawing to the panel in preparation for painting.

Then the fun part begins— actually putting paint on the panel! It can take anywhere from several days to a few months to finish a piece, depending on size and complexity. I like to keep in touch with my collectors throughout the painting process, and enjoy sending photographs of the work in progress.

Here’s an image of the finished painting, “Girl’s Best Friend” and the collector with her painting the day it arrived at her home.
